This website is safe to use and interact with. It is privately administered from the UK, while the content is our own, speaking to you from The United Nations Refugee Camp in Kakuma, Kenya. (UNHCR)

We are reluctantly asking for your help.

We fled from our home countries in fear for our lives, seeking sanctuary from the United Nations. We are a group of 9 gay men and 5 Lesbians, 4 of whom are the respective mothers to 7 children.

Please read how being trapped in this horrible camp is impacting our health and well-being.

Harden

My name is Harden. I’m a national Ugandan gay man aged 21.

I knew I was gay in schooling. After a certain level of education in Uganda, I found a job to survive on my own.

My life and love in a nutshell

I was staying in a safe home in Uganda and started dating another gay guy who stayed at the same place. About himself, he said I knew I was gay from schooling. It was never a choice, just instinct. We pushed up for some time and decided to rent and stay together.

But homophobia killed it

In the process, the community started giving us negative attention and following whatever we did. We were in deep love, obviously noticed by other people, which we didn’t realise then.

It wasn’t long before the community and the police attacked our home for an arrest. Fortunately, we were out for the day and heard about it before we returned. Friends told us we were facing charges because of our sexual orientation.

I ended up here in Kakuma

That led me to flee from Uganda in 2021. I haven’t heard about my partner since.

I could tell you a lot more about my life, but who is likely to care or help me (and us) escape from this toxic and violent place? If you’re reading this, thank you. Please read what my group colleagues also have to say. Our Profiles
